4 Words of Wisdom From Al and Lisa Robertson

Last Updated: April 3, 2023

What does the famous Duck Dynasty Clan have to say to Covenant Eyes? We wanted to know, so our podcast team sat down with Al and Lisa Robertson to talk about their shows and other projects, their testimonies, and how they’ve experienced the grace and mercy of God despite many mistakes.

Along with many laughs and great stories, here are four key takeaways from the podcast (click here to listen to the full podcast and many other great episodes)!

Understand the Importance of Family

One of the unique and refreshing aspects of the  Duck Dynasty show was the way it portrayed families. And it’s truly difficult to overstate the importance of family for the Robertsons. Al and Lisa have even written numerous books for couples and families, and they both regularly speak at churches and other events in support of families.

Wherever they share their message, the Robertsons use their own family stories to help others. Al told us that comes from their upbringing:

“Our family [is] one of the reasons why Lisa and I’ve been so transparent… my parents were that way, you know. They raised us to be transparent and to help people. And so that’s always been a part of who we are.”

The Robertson’s understanding of the importance of family has shaped their message and their ministry—and continues to shape the people they reach.

Put God in the Center of Your Brokenness

While famous for being part of a fun-loving and happy family, Al and Lisa are no strangers to family brokenness. Their own marriage was nearly wrecked by unfaithfulness. But they learned that the path forward is to put God back in the center.

“The first thing we had to do was turn our eyes toward Jesus and restore that relationship first,” said Lisa. It was after fixing the relationship with Jesus that they could focus on their relationship with one another as a couple. It is truly remarkable the change that can happen in your life when God takes the lead in your brokenness.”

This discovery changed everything for Al and Lisa, and they’re eager to share it with others. “We feel like we’re beggars who found bread,” said Al.

Know That Christ Is Big Enough to Take All Your Sin

The Robertsons understand the seriousness of sin and how destructive it is. Anyone who is familiar with Phil, Jace, and Al’s podcast Unashamed knows that they pull no punches when talking about sin. But they share a message of hope that Christ is big enough to take away sin—even sins like pornography and marital unfaithfulness.

Al shared with us:

“For all of the rotten things that we’ve done—you know whether it be pornography, whether you’ve had an affair, whether it’s stealing, or any of those sins—Christ is big enough to take that. I’ve made so many mistakes in my life, but he has always been faithful, and he will always be faithful. He is always there waiting for us. All we have to do is call out his name, and he is just right there, and he pursues us, and he loves us, and he only wants what’s good for us.”

Don’t Be Afraid to Seek Help

Al and Lisa share Covenant Eyes’s commitment to the importance of relationships and living out our lives authentically in community.

“Admit your mistakes. To admit that before others, but also to admit that before God. When you confess your sins one to another, that’s when the Lord begins to heal you and that’s when your life begins to change.”

Al added, “Even if you’re a believer, you need accountability, you need support, [and] you might need counseling… Don’t be afraid to be transparent about your weakness. But don’t be stingy with the victories of God.”
