4 Reasons You Should Watch “The Blind”

Last Updated: September 19, 2023

The Covenant Eyes Podcast team recently made the trip DEEP into the heart of Louisiana to meet with Phil and Kay Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame, and to talk about their new movie, The Blind. Although it doesn’t directly deal with the issue of pornography, it touches on important issues. We believe it’s a great movie for everyone, especially our Covenant Eyes family.

Here are four reasons we encourage you to go see The Blind.

The Robertson’s Speak the Gospel Unashamedly

Anyone who knows Phil Robertson knows that he’s not shy about sharing his faith! The Blind tells the story behind his passion for the Gospel. He was an alcoholic and his life was in shambles until he found Jesus. “The reason I was a drunken heathen was I had never heard the Gospel preached,” explained Phil.

When he heard the message of salvation, it changed his life. Phil recounted:

“It sounds too good to be true. You mean all the mistakes I’ve made—and it’s a lot of ‘em—not being counted against me if I come to Jesus? … that’s pretty good.”

Phil said:

“He’s there 24/7, not counting our sins against us. I need that. I need that a lot. I can’t get around it. I’ve never heard anything like that … What a better world it would be for all of us—God not counting our sins against us. The blood of Jesus removed them.”

The Blind Shows the Devastation of Addiction

At Covenant Eyes, we help people dealing with the devastation of pornography addiction. In Phil’s struggles with alcohol and sexual promiscuity, we find parallels with bondage to pornography. It shows the kind of havoc that any out-of-control behavior wreaks on marriage and family.

The Blind explores the darkness where Phil lived for years before coming to Christ. For those who know Phil now, it’s hard for them to believe this was his life. He told us:

“The movie is showing primarily the wicked side of me. But it does catch my conversion to Jesus and then shows that we’re a happy family now.”

The Blind Offers Encouragement for Struggling Marriages

Kay explained that the authenticity of their story and their lives is a big part of what has drawn such a large audience to them.

“They always say, ‘We feel like we can relate to your family. We feel like you’re regular people…’ they didn’t see somebody who was trying to be somebody they’re not.”

But before they were a happy and approachable family, Kay and Phil’s marriage was on the rocks. They came very close to calling it quits. Kay offers this encouragement to wives whose husbands are battling addiction, whether alcohol or pornography:

“Fight for your marriage. It’s a battle with Satan.”

Their Story Reveals the Transforming Power of the Gospel

Phil’s life was on a destructive course. And yet, though few could see it, God had other plans for him! Phil’s sister, Janice Ellen, was one of the few who recognized this. “My little sister said, ‘If you convert him, you convert thousands … There’s just something about him. He’ll reach thousands.'”

This became a reality for Phil. “My job is to share Jesus,” he told us.

For Phil, his transformation from an alcoholic living an immoral lifestyle to a prolific evangelist is simply part of the way that God works. “Just think about the way this all started: God using ordinary men to get the gospel preached. Peter was a commercial fisherman—so was I.”

Once Phil found Jesus, his life changed forever. But it didn’t happen all at once:

“It takes a little time to live the fruit of the Spirit … It’s pretty tough for people to love each other. All you have to do is look at our culture. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness … It’s just a tough thing to learn.”

Phil added:

“We all make mistakes. But the blood of Jesus is there to remove them. To your listeners, if you want to live a life where there is hope. He’s the way to go.”
